Manchester City were drawn in the Champions League Group of Death and were unable to beat the champions of Spain, Germany or the Netherlands in any of their six European matches this autumn which means a rock bottom place in Group D.

Roberto Mancini had hoped to finish third above Ajax and qualify for the Europa League, although Edin Dzeko missed a good chance for the champions of England and Julian Schieber ended up scoring the only goal of the game.

Dortmund failed at the group stage of the competition last season although they are among the favourites to win this season, with Jürgen Klopp’s side having gone through the group stage without a defeat and it’s to their credit that they won this match having little to play for.

City were missing Yaya Toure and David Silva, with Scott Sinclair earning a rare start, while Dzeko and Carlos Tevez were the preferred strike pairing although Sergio Aguero came on within the hour to add extra bite to the visitors’ attack.

Dortmund were typically spritely and Joe Hart was called upon to make several saves just as he had during the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium although the England goalkeeper was unable to prevent Schieber securing the points after the young forward converted Jakub Blaszczykowski’s cross.
